There’s a lot of people that know James Gunn as being one of the writers for Marvel but his earlier works remain a mystery to most. But in his earlier days Gunn was something of a provocateur, constantly tweeting posts that would make most cringe. So how did this happen?
It all started when he began to critisice President Donald Trump on twitter, prompting far-right propagandists Mike Cernovich and Jack Posobiec to find dirt on Gunn which is exactly what they did after going-through his two-year earlier tweets. These tweets were often jokes about paedophilia. Something which Disney did clearly not take lightly as they fired him soon after.
Despite this the decision has received considerable backlash and Gunn himself has apologised about the tweets saying, “… they were stupid, not at all funny, wildly insensitive, and certainly not provocative like I had hoped, but also because they don’t reflect the person I am today or have been for some time.”
Then, in a daring move, Gunn was quickly swept up by DC to write for the new Suicide Squad. It could be a move that comes back to haunt Disney as it poses the biggest threat to the Avengers. Although Suicide Squad received generally negative reviews from critics it garnered a massive $967 million dollars worldwide. Now imagine the potential the second instalment has if Gunn steps in and write and exceptional script with the kind of witty dialogue we have come to see and love form the Marvel films. I have been saying for years that amazing actors, and expensive CGI effects count for nothing if the writings crap! We could finally see a good DC film with well-thought out characters and intriguing plot. I’m holding my breath for this one…
